STEVEN SIEGEL

BIOGRAPHY

Spring 2018
Albany International Airport, Albany, NY

Beginning in April, Steven Siegel’s seminal work, Biography, will be on view at the Albany International Airport. This mixed-media installation is an epic 150′ long mural incorporating materials drawn from our contemporary day to day life – remnants of wire, recycled newspapers, shredded tires, computer parts, and fabrics. From afar, Biography looks like a vast topographical map: cables and hard drives mime cities; black power cords read like highways; spines of newspapers resemble beaches and mountains, and carpet scraps in rich browns and oranges recall aerial views of farms. Siegel uses the detritus of our culture to weave a ravishing, glittering, and glistening visual symphony in all its synthetic, inorganic wonder.

SUNCHEON WEAVE

STEVEN SIEGEL

Suncheon Bay International Eco-Environmental Art Festival, 2016
Suncheon, South Korea

Suncheon Weave was commissioned by the Suncheon Bay International Eco-Environmental Art Festival for Suncheon, South Korea in 2016.  It was built on the site over the course of a week by two professional carpenters and 4 or 5 volunteers.  The work consists of 10,000 lbs of newspaper overruns that are woven between existing pine trees and heavy poles that were planted in place. After dozens of iterations of paper sculptures made over 25 years, Suncheon Weave is the second that uses a single wall technique. It allows for a visitor to enter into the quiet, walled space within the grove of trees.

STEVEN SIEGEL

September 19 – November 1, 2015
1315 MASS MoCA Way, North Adams MA

CYNTHIA-REEVES launches their new season at 1315 MASS MoCA Way with Biography, the gallery’s debut exhibition of American sculptor, Steven Siegel, since joining the gallery in 2015. A concise show of conceptual installations, Siegel finds his muse through piles of discarded remnants. As an excavator, geologist, sociological commentator and documentarian, Siegel culls through the detritus of our daily lives – plastics, rubber, wires, casing and molded housings – items that speak of a culture unconcerned with the consequences of our ingenuity.
